Corn is still the most important crop of the Andean peoples. The lives of the people depended on its prosperity. Divine powers were attributed to it.
Maize was fermented to make “chicha”, a frothy beverage consumed at ceremonial occasions and celebrations. “Chicha” and maize flour were also common offerings to the gods.
