Axel Svinhufvud (1867-1939) was a Swedish officer in the Södermanlands Regiment.
From 1893 to 1896 he served in the Congo, mainly in the northeast of the country, in the area where the Mangbetu live (Kabasidu). On his return to Sweden, he brought home a collection of African objects. Many of them were gifts from chiefs.
Svinhufvud wrote a book about his service in the Congo, which not only shows part of his ethnographic collection, but also tells the story of the objects. The work “In the Service of the Congo” appeared posthumously in Stockholm in 1942.
