Overall, this stool is very solid. The caryatid figure impresses with a strikingly powerful design language and strong sculptural presence. Note the voluminous hairdo, which forms a strong contrast to the figure’s relatively small face, her muscular arms and, above all, the oversized feet, which take up almost the entire depth of the base.
Pinto-Velasquez locates the object in the late 19th / early 20th century in the Kwilu-Kasai region, where this powerful figure style developed as a result of the expansion of the Chokwe into the southern regions of the Congo.
