Description
wood,
Ashanti stools have always had a spiritual significance in addition to their purely practical use. The stool was regarded as the seat of its owner’s soul. When not in use, it was therefore leant against a wall at an angle so that none of the passing souls could sit on it.
If someone died after leading an exemplary life, their stool was blackened and kept in the clan’s chair room. From then on, it was regarded as the seat of the ancestors and was sacrificed as such.
