wood, brown patina, nails, four-parted sub-construction, round seat, incised curvilinear decor, accentuated with decoration tags, narrow sides in openwork design, slightly dam., minor missing parts, cracks, abrasion of paint, traces of humidity, one of the narrow sides loose;
the Saramacca are one of six Maroon peoples (fomerly called “Bush Negroes”) in the Republic of Suriname and one of the Maroon peoples in French Guiana. The ancestors of the Saramaka were amongst those Africans sold as plantation slaves to Europeans in Suriname in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
