Description
wood, matt patina, polychrome paint, knock-kneed, the big hands resting on the bulging stomach, wearing a “kindombolo” mask, min. dam., missing parts through insect caused damage, cracks, traces of abrasion, base;
free standing sculptures were kept in the inner chamber of the chief’s ritual house, where they served as power objects used both to protect and discipline the chief.
The drilled holes symbolize scars caused by smallpox. “Kindombolo’s” scars evoke his character since many argue that survivors of smallpox lose all respect for physical danger or social censure.
