Description

wood, dark brown patina, camwood powder, slightly asymmetrical facial features, the back of the head widely projecting to the back, coiffure with delicate incised ornaments, slightly dam., minor missing parts (both foot tips and hands), small traces of insect caused damage, hand-written note on the underside, proving that the figure was on loan, on plate;
even though the Lunda were once extremely powerful and have influenced a vast area politically, for sculpture they seem to have relied on the people they conquered. If any implements were needed to enhance court protocol, or as emblems of power, rank, title or prestige, the Lunda either bought them or commissioned them form the carvers of the conquered or vassal peoples (Chokwe, Luena, Dinga, Luba).
