Small female half figure "yanda"

wood, dark brown patina, reduced facial features, remains of a coiffure made from real hair, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, base;
the abstract “yanda” figures belonged to the “mani” society. They were intended to promote the well-being of it´s members, especially their health and prosperity, they should guarantee safety from sorcery and general success. Most “yanda” were made of wood, some of pottery. The aesthetic appearance of the figure had nothing to do with its effectiveness. The decisive factor was the use of sacred wood, a special consecration and continuous care for the figures which were kept in small shrines outside the village.
