Raum studied painting from 1946 to 1951 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg under Hermann Wilhelm. From 1951 to 1952 he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Walter Becker and from 1952 to 1954 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Xaver Fuhr.
Walter Raum lived and worked in Achmühle near Bad Tölz.
