Rare masque anthropo-/zoomorphe "do"

Description

wood, blackish brown patina, white, red and indigo blue pigment, with curved buffalo horns and ornamental lateral projections, cross-hatched eyebrows, raised scarification marks, slightly dam., abrasion of paint, rep. (breakage at the right horn).
The Jimini share a special masking tradition with their neighbours the Ligbi, Dioula, Kulango and Senufo, all living in the north and northeast of the Ivory Coast. These masks are called “do” and their sculptural expressions combine stylistic elements of various ethnic groups. The appendages beneath the ears are strongly reminscent of similar features of the “kpelie” masks of the Senufo, at which the mask as a whole reminds of the “do muso” mask of the Dioula.
