Description

wood, black patina, two strings of glass beads, crudly carved angular forms, strong neck, flat face with projecting chin, the eyes originally provided with inlay (shell), hole in the head for insertion of magical materials, slightly dam., cracks (head, back, base), abrasion of paint;
the Tetela are a group of disparate peoples who had a common ancestor. Thus, it is not surprising that their sculpture reflects different sources of inspiration, borrowed from different neighbouring groups. Statuary of the south emulates or interprets styles of the northern Songe. Present figure reminding of the “nkisi” figures of the Songe.
