Description
wood (cottonwood root), coated with white clay (kaolin), colourful painted, small bundle of cord on the head, both hands originally holding some items (rattles), collection number backside “1605”, slightly dam., strong abrasion of paint, water spots, base;
this “katsina” is an import from the Zuni pantheon. The “sipikne” is a guardian. He usually appears with a group of “sipikne” or alone. He protects the other “katsinam” and the people. He will appear during the Hopi “Shalako” ceremony or during initiation rites.
