These posts formed the center pole in initiation huts for young girls.
Meurant reports about forty of these posts collected in the vicinity of Morogoro. Jahn reproduces a selection of them in the form of sketches, one of which largely corresponds to the present one (Jahn, 1994, S. 223 V / 7).
According to Meurant, the posts, which show more or less stylized breasts and a head, represent the mother with whom the young girls are supposed to identify.
