Plaque de relief "1966 D S Lagos 1977"
Description
aluminium, signed “Asiru Olatunde Osogbo”, mounted on wooden panel
Asiru Olatunde originally worked as a blacksmith. When he was no longer able to pursue this profession in the late 1950s due to health reasons, he turned to small wrought-iron works in non-ferrous metal. In 1958, he met Ulli Beier, who took him under his wing. Beier procured a commission for large reliefs for a hotel in Lagos. Since no copper sheets were available for such formats, Ulli Beier organised aluminium sheets from a local cooking pot factory. Large-format relief panels in embossed aluminium became one of Asiru Olatunde’s trademarks.
