Jasper Martin Otto von Oertzen (1880–1948) was an officer in the German colonial force in Cameroon, where he served from 1903 to 1908.
During his service, he took part in the campaigns against the Anyang and Vute peoples and commanded several military and administrative posts, including Basho, Joko and Akoafim. His duties included the development and control of the colonial administrative territories, as well as the expansion of transport routes.
Von Oertzen published his experiences in Cameroon in several works, including “In Wildnis und Gefangenschaft. Kameruner Tierstudien” (Berlin, 1913). Owing to his many years of service in southern and western Cameroon, he was regarded as a contemporary collector and facilitator of ethnographic artefacts from the German colonial era.
