Partie d'un Sarong "tapis" · Indonésie - Sud Sumatra, Lampung · ID: 3047821
Description
silk, cotton, gold-wrapped thread,
In the southern region of Sumatra live the Lampung people, who invested their profits from the pepper trade in ceremonial objects and jewellery.
The elaborately decorated, tube-shaped sarongs, called “tapis”, were woven by hand from cotton and silk, dyed by using centuries-old methods, interwoven with gold and silver threads, embroidered with silk or pineapple fibres and applied with mirrors and mica.
From these fascinating garments, one could see the social rank and identity of the wearer within a clan.
