Description

wood, pigments, wasch patina, base

Beautiful and finely crafted specimens in the style of Esubiyi, the founder of the second major carving workshop in Abeokuta or his son Akiode (1875-1936). For comparable figures see Homberger (1991), p. 36, ill. 47/48.

Typical characteristics of the Abeokuta carvers are above all the unusual hand posture and the carved loincloth. The facial features of both figures show traces of repeated washing and feeding procedures.
