Description
heavy wood, pigments, metal, crossbar
Early and unusual example with four horns and two additional face halves flanking the actual face. The only comparable work with four horns was collected in 1931 during the Dakar-Djibouti expedition and is in the collection of the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Paris (AHDRC 0083507).
“Walu” masks were worn during “dama” funeral ceremonies, which Griaule interpreted as a method of restoring order and peace after the disturbances caused by death.
