A comparable mask with this unusual disc-shaped framing of the face and the crowning bird motif can be found in the exhibition catalogue on Art from the Ivory Coast (Vevey, 1969, p. 135).
The mask belonged to the male “dié” society. At large festivals, in which several villages could participate, masks of this kind appeared in groups of up to ten dancers.
