the name of the mask “young woman” refers to a mythic person, who died young and whose bereavement was recalled by dancing this type of mask. Accordingly the masks show a female face corresponding to the prevailing ideal of beauty and the narrow eyes refer to the fact that a dead person is depicted. The masks were danced by men for entertainment and appeared on various festive occasions.
