Description
light wood, small remains of gesso-grounding (gypsum or chalk), washed, bulgy eyes, mouth with hanging flews, furrowed face, three deepenings on the forehead, slightly dam., missing parts (nostril, teeth, upper rim of the mask), rep. (upper rim of the mask), metal socle;
present mask might represent a “tengu” shrine mask, depicting a playful demon dwelling in the forest. Such masks are used in rural village Shinto festivals and processions. “Tengu” play an important role within the popular version of japaneses Shinto religion even nowadays. They receive food sacrifices in order to keep them well disposed.
