Description
wood, pigments, feathers, base
This rare two-handed mace combines the functions of a weapon and a symbol of military authority. The characteristic widening at the upper end increased its range as a signalling device and identified its bearer as a military commander. Feathers attached to the underside of the club-like head further enhanced its visibility. The actual striking part is located on the straight edge behind the flat widening. The weapon was wielded with both hands and swung in the manner of a long baton.
