“Pustaha” contain texts, prayers and spells written in ritual language, interspersed with magical drawings. The six Batak languages each have their own script, which is written horizontally from left to right.

“Lontar” manuscripts deal with various aspects of life like religion, astronomy, astrology, history, genealogy, homeopathy, healing, epics.
