“sojutsu” is the japanese martial art of fighting with a japanese lance “yari”, which developed during the Sengoku time (about 1477 to 1573) when the “yari” replaced the “naginata” (sword lance) on the battle fields. The “yari” became very popular as a weapon for the “samurai” and foot troops “ashigaru”. The “yari” was used in close combat (fencing) but was not thrown (difference between lance and spear).
