Description

wood, encrusted blackish brown patina, real hair, male/female, eyes with inlay of mirror glass/resp. animal tooth (?), attached pouches of animal skin filled with magical substances, sacrificial traces (head), slightly dam., on plate;
the Tiv have two types of figural sculpture: post figures called “ihambe” and smaller portable figures. Both types seem to have been general tutelary deities revered for the protection and prosperity they provided agricultural lands and families, especially regarding marriage and human fertility. Both types were associated with medicines that repelled evil and fostered health and well-being.
