Description
light grey stone, rest., base
The Mezcala tradition is characterized by the geometric abstraction of its human figures, while Chontal works exhibit an added degree of naturalism. Both traditions are closely associated with the mountainous region of Guerrero.
Stone carvings such as this one would have been buried with the deceased, usually as a gesture to provide support to those in the afterlife. Since their excavation they have been revered as sacred objects.
