Description
wood, lacquered, decorated with dragon motif in flat relief in blue-green, red and gold, crest “mon” of the famous Samurai family Minamoto, four metal eyelets at underside for attachment, slightly dam., lacquer min. chipped off around rim;
“jingasa” were used by Samurai and sometimes matchlock soldiers, mostly during the mid to late Edo period (1700 -1860). The word “gasa” meaning “hat” and “jin” “military”. As the Edo period was a period of peace, “kabuto” were less used and “jingasa” became more popular. The “jingasa” should protect from rain and sunshine, they should give an accent on the other aspects of “Samurais daily life in times of peace”. They were worn for hunting and riding, were a symbol of social status.
