Grande sculpture de jaguar, env. 500 - 1000 apr. J.-C. · Costa Rica, Chiriquí / Diquís · ID: 3053000
Description
sandstone, orange-red pigment,
An imposing sculpture carved from a single block of stone. The artist placed particular emphasis on the rendering of the head, with its large eyes and snarling, fang-bearing mouth, while the massive body is treated in a more simplified manner. The face is best viewed from below, suggesting that this jaguar was originally positioned in a niche above the viewer.
A comparable jaguar sculpture was sold at auction on 20 March 2018, at Binoche et Giquello as lot 18.
