Description

wood, clay incrustations, base

A beautiful, elegant figure with elongated limbs and symmetrically arranged, clearly defined body and facial features.

According to Meyer, these “bateba” figures show mourning gestures that the Lobi also display at the funerals of loved ones and in other situations of suffering. According to his interpretation, the “bateba yadawora” took on the suffering that their owner would otherwise have to endure.
