Bamgboye of Odo Owa (ca. 1893/95–1978), was considered one of the great Yoruba master sculptors of the last century. He was Chief Alaga of Odo-Owa and was especially known for his complex compositions of “epa” helmet masks. The mask’s complex tableau with its architectural monumentality and fully rounded figures is a hallmark of Bamgboye’s style. In the 90 years of his life only Arowogun, Bamgboshe and Oshamuko, carvers in the neighboring town of Osi-Ilorin, equaled Bamgboye in craftsmanship and artistic imagination.
