wood, pigments, base

Père Knobs, a catholic missionary who lived among the Senufo from 1923 to 1935, noted that horses were “relatively numerous” but they were owned only by the wealthy. Horses cannot be bred successfully in the Senufo region, and must be imported from further north. Not only are they costly to buy, but they are expensive to maintain and feed. As they easily succumb to diseases such as colic, sleeping sickness, and intestinal worms, their life span is short: normally one to two years.
