Jaina is a small island off the western coast of the Yucatán Peninsula that once served as a burial site for the Maya elite and is now an important archaeological site known for its exquisitely crafted figurines.
Many of the small statues depict members of the religious and social elite or high-ranking warriors. The exact purpose for which these figurines were placed in the graves remains unclear.
