The history of Oshogbo is closely linked to the work of Uli & Georgina Beier and Susanne Wenger. Their work marked the beginning of the so-called “New Sacred Art” and the “Mbari” movement.
One of the artists of this movement is Buraimoh Gbadamosi, who works with stone and wood. Born in Oshogbo in Oyo State, he is the younger brother of the writer Bakare Gbadamosi.
Before meeting Susanne Wenger, who recognised his talent for wood carving, he had no formal training. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and was involved in the reconstruction of temples for the Yoruba gods.
