Figure d´ancêtre debout "iagalagana" · Nigéria, Mumuye · ID: 3043545
Description
wood, partly shiny dark brown patina, striking small head rising from strong neck, disc-shaped ears (female type), min. dam., traces of insect caused damage and abrasion, small missing parts, cracks, base.
Mumuye figures all show a high degree of stylistic diversity which is paralleled by a great variety of functions: some were used as oracles, others in connection with healing, and still others reinforced the status of important elders as embodiments of vaguely conceived tutelary spirits. The first function of these sculptures is to watch over the family enclosure and to protect its inhabitants as well as guests who are allowed to enter there. Those figures that were seen near the huts of the “Masters of the Rain” seem also to grant them the power of intercession, guaranteeing the rythm of the seasons, and particularly favoring the growing of crops.
