Description

iron wood, surface texture strongly marked by insect activity and weathering

The striking posture of the present figure, often described as that of a mourner, is commonly found. Several hypotheses exist regarding its meaning.

According to one legend, an ancient Jaraï king was buried with his servants. When no one remained to mourn him, figures of his servants were placed to represent grief and to symbolize their service in the afterlife. Another interpretation suggests that the sculptures served as substitutes for human sacrifices. According to the Jaraï themselves, these funerary figures are intended to prevent the spirit of the deceased (“yang atâo”) from being alone after the “grave abandonment” ceremony.
