Description

ivory,

The small netsuke figure depicts a European (Dutchman) holding a small monkey under his arms and grasping it by its paws. The depiction of foreigners with exotic animals - especially monkeys - was a widespread and popular netsuke motif from the Edo period onward, reflecting both a fascination with the foreign and a humorous observation of cultural difference.
