Description
light wood, dark accents, pokerwork, armless body, triangular facial plane, incised signs and symbols on body and face, slightly dam., paint rubbed off;
the “yanda” figures were made for the “mani” society. They were intended to promote the well-being of its members, especially their health and prosperity, they should guarantee safety from sorcery and general success. Most “yanda” were made of wood, some of pottery. The aesthetic appearance of the figure had nothing to do with its effectiveness. The decisive factor was the use of sacred wood, a special consecration and continuous care for the figures which were kept in small shrines outside the village.
