Anyone who has experienced spiritual possession or interference by a deity in his or her life would be asked to commisson a sculpture. Such a person would only be acting on the orders of a priest who, through the “afa” divination, is able to ascertain the wishes of the spirit on behalf of the client. The “aklama” figure cements the covenant relationship established between devotee and spirit. The god must be consulted daily to keep it actively engaged in the devotees life. In return for this attention, the god provides blessings and protection.
