cane frame, barkcloth, lime, pigments, wood, fabric, grasses / leaves,

The “dukduk” secret society was built around a group of initiated men whose realm was religion, magic, and knowledge of the spirit world.

The two main spirits were the female “tubuan” and the male “dukduk”. Both are represented by striking cone-shaped dance crests and wear layered skirts of leaves down to their knees. The female “tubuan” is represented by a conical black mask painted with large, white round eyes. The male “dukduk” dance crest is without facial features, it is taller than the “tubuan” mask and has a complex decorative superstructure.

“Tubuan” and “dukduk” spirits were called forth for three main events: “vunavuna”, Big Man funeral ceremonies; “balaguan”, a series of dances related to an ancestral commemoration ceremony; and “matamatam”, a mortuary ceremony held by the clan for all its ancestors. (According to JP Meyer, Vol. II, 1995, p. 361 f.).
