Chapiteau romain, IVe siècle apr. J.-C.
Description
proconnesian marble,
Corinthian capital type with acanthus-like leaves and bulging, curled ends at the four corners.
Roman art was heavily influenced by Greek culture, particularly in architecture and sculpture. The Romans adopted the Greek styles of capitals - Doric, Ionic and Corinthian - and modified them to suit their own aesthetic and functional needs. In doing so, they introduced innovative hybrid forms, such as the composite capital, which combines Ionic volutes and Corinthian acanthus leaves.
