Evanst-Pritchard, who collected such a shield from the Nuer in 1936, reported on the multifunctional usability of this type of shield.

The underside is partially hollowed out in the centre and provided with a bar that served as a handle when the object was used as a parrying shield.

The short legs meant that it could also be used as a headrest or stool. The hollow is even said to have served as a container for smoking utensils, for example.
