Description

3 pcs., shell, bamboo, fibre, decorated in a dot pattern with anthropomorphic figures and stylised “mithun”, both motifs combined on one ear ornament, various sizes, h: 7 cm & 7.7 cm

Ear ornaments with human figures are prerogative of the warriors, elders and members of the village council.

The stylised “mithun” corresponds to the markings that were tattooed on the chest of the headhunter after the capture of the first head. The “mithun” symbolises wealth and fertility and is a recurrent decorative motif in Naga art.

The shell from which this ear jewellery is made is said to have magical powers. It is believed to improve the sense of hearing when placed close to the ear.
