This crest is a variant of water spirit masks of the “Ekine” cult of the Ijaw, as danced by the Ijebu in the south of Yorubaland.

Their performances are meant to honour “olokun”, the goddess of the sea and a number of other water spirits, who are supposed to care for the well-being of the people.
