This crest is a variation of water spirit masks of the “Ekine” cult, as danced by the Ijebu in the south of Yorubaland.
Their performances are meant to honour “olokun”, the goddess of the sea and a number of other water spirits, who are supposed to care for the well-being of the people.
The object Water spirit headdress “igodo” (bird) with the object ID 3047152 was part of the auction 95th Tribal Art Auction on October 24, 2020. The object with the lot number 101 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,200 with an asking price of EUR 1,000.
