This mask is intended to prevent harm to its owner in several different ways. The first is the most obvious, in that it would provide physical protection, coming between the wearer and the weapons of the enemy.
Secondly, masks such as this could offer a psychological advantage over the enemy. This metallic face with revealed teeth would frighten any foe that faced the wearer.
Finally, it may also have afforded some spiritual assistance to the warrior who possessed it.
