Description
fired clay with pigment remains, rest., base
Vinca is the name of an archaeological site near Belgrade (Serbia), more precisely a “tell” or settlement mound with nine metres of stratified occupation layers. The Neolithic–Chalcolithic culture discovered there spread during the 6th and 5th millennia BC across the territory of present-day Serbia, northeastern Bosnia, western Romania, and western Bulgaria.
The Vinca culture is primarily known for its ceramics and numerous anthropomorphic clay idols, which were likely used as cult images or votive offerings in sacred areas and near altars.
