ceramic/ terracotta, remains of an old collection label

This object is the work of the Azande ceramic artist Mbitim, who worked in the 1930s in the village of Lirangu, near Yambio in southern Sudan.

Through Europeans working at the Lirangu Sleeping Sickness Center, his works found their way into English and American collections. Some of them are published by Schildkrout & Keim, 1990, p. 230 f.


The object Vessel cover/ altarpiece with two anthropomorphic heads with the object ID 3047170 was last part of the auction 95th Tribal Art Auction at October 24, 2020 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 241 achieved a sales price of EUR 700.
