Description
both pounders are made from heavy wood; a) crowned by a half-figured ancestor spirit figure, reddish brown shiny patina, l: 48,5 cm: b) crowned by animal sculpture (marsupial with long tail), ornamentally carved cuff on top, l: 52 cm, both with strong traces of usage (pounding area), fine cracks, abrasion of paint; used for pounding manioc; c) drum stick, Middle Sepik, Sawos village, wood, brown patina, traces of black paint, crowned by a stylized hornbill head, strong traces of usage at the base, fine cracks;
one single stick was used for sending messages while two sticks were used for ritual celebrations.
