Lapalud, born on 22 September 1868 in Miliana, Algeria, was a French colonial official. After holding various positions in the colonial administration in the Congo and India, he was governor of Gabon in 1918 and made it to governor-general of French Equatorial Africa in 1920 before serving as governor of the Ivory Coast in 1925. A square in Abidjan bears his name.

These two carvings captivate by the fineness in the elaboration of facial features and details. They are worked by one hand.

They were collected in situ by Maurice Pierre Lapalud, who was governor of the Ivory Coast from 1925 to 1930.
