Two crescent-shaped fibulas "hilal"

Tunisia and Lybia
not available anymore
Provenance
Dietrich von Reininghaus (1918-1993), Munich, Germany

Description

silver, engraved,

  1. (probably) Tunisia, d: 16.2 cm; w: 152 g

  2. Libya, several unidentifiable signature stamps, one “Tripoli shield” stamp, d: 11.3 cm; g: 66 g

The engravings on “hilal” fibulas usually show a combination of bird and/or fish motifs in combination with floral and/or geometric ornaments and small sun symbols. Crescent fibulas of this type are found in Tunisia as well as (frequently) in Libya. A clear assignment can only be made on the basis of the silver stamps.
